The first of many wines from our new estate vineyard, Mira Laguna. This Sangiovese at Mira Laguna was planted in 1998 and has been farmed organically since inception. The entire vineyard was converted to no-till around 2018, and since we took over the farming in the middle of 2024, we have begun to integrate our animals, plant pollinator rows, and introduce native perennial hedgerows and wild bird boxes. Our goal is always to reinvigorate the native ecology that once thrived before the vineyard monoculture was introduced. We absolutely dismiss the idea that a vineyard should be farmed like a monoculture to prove that holistic farming can lead to a healthier ecosystem where we are able to reduce inputs all while increasing the energy of a place and the quality of the wine. Good things take time, and this is only the beginning.
The Sangiovese that goes into this sparkling wine comes from the wettest portion of Mira Laguna. The vineyard is steep, and water naturally drains down into this block. Because of this, we hardly need to irrigate, and the clusters are plump and the vines are vigorous. All of the Sangiovese on the property is a Rodino cone. There is some ambiguity as to where this clone originally comes from, but it presents itself joyously with leading red aromatics and a slightly candied mouthful.

Non-vintage number 01 is about 85% wine from 2024 and the rest from 2025. The 2024 portion of this wine was harvested at the beginning of September, destemmed and fermented natively on skins for about ten days. The wine was pressed gently and aged in neutral oak barrels without sulfur for one year. As the 2025 component was just beginning its native fermentation, it was added to the prior vintage. We watched this fermentation closely to catch the perfect moment for bottling - right at the instant where the remaining sugar would lead to the desired level of carbonation in the bottle, we bottled it. We’ve perfected this technique in our own way. It's our way of making a natural sparkling wine while using the vineyard's native yeast and natural sugars. No yeast packets or big bags of refined sugar here! The wine finished its second primary fermentation in bottle and was left on tirage for two months. We disgorged, capped, and cleaned every bottle on December 17, 2025.

about the label
Art: My mom, Eileen Anderson, painted these striking Humboldt lilies. We consistently find patches of Lilium humboldtii at the ridge of the Santa Ynez range that towers over our vineyard. I think these lilies foreshadow what's inside the bottle perfectly - a little wild, bold, delicate, and a bit unexpected.
