These vines are part of the original planting by Charlotte Young in 1971. The 2025 vintage marked these vine’s 54th year. This wine comes from the far western side of the property - the edge, or the “périphérie”. While the majority of the old vines in the vineyard have typically three foot shoots, and moderately sized clusters, the “périphérie” row can have up to 10 feet long canes sprawling onto the ground, often with football-sized clusters. I felt there could be a more intentional use for this anomalous, higher-vigor section rather than simply blending it into the block-designate wines. So, as an ode to the traditional way of harvesting, and in an effort to make a fresh wine out of a serious vineyard, I made a co-fermented field blend. In some ways, it is the truest representation of the site, as it comprises all three original blocks. It is a special wine, and it holds a special place in our hearts!

Périphérie was harvested in the early morning of September 18, 2025. The ratio of each of the three varieties was determined by the fruitfulness of vines as we worked up the two “peripherie” designate rows. This year the blend is about 55% Marsanne, 35% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre. The Marsanne, Syrah, and Mourvedre were harvested into the same picking bins and brought to the cellar to be destemmed together into a two-ton fermenter. After native fermentation commenced, this wine was made with more “infusion” than extraction. We used minimal pour overs and only the lightest love touches. 2025 Périphérie was sent to press after 11 days on skins. This wine was then aged for 6 months in neutral French oak barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered on March 25, 2025.

Tasting Notes
This is certainly my favorite version of Périphérie yet. Périphérie is a fresh but serious expression of Ibarra-Young Vineyard. Possibly its truest representation as it encompasses all three of the original blocks on the property. This wine has become quite special to me! You can seek out glimpses of all three varieties in this wine. Delicate yet fairly formal. She’s delightfully purple and mouth-wateringly red. 2025 Périphérie is refined and crushable - but crushable in a fancy way. Like you’re about to have the best night of your life tearing it up on the dancefloor at your best friend's wedding.

about the label
Art: The weasel on the front was painted by my mother, Eileen Anderson. The native Mustela frenata, the long-tailed weasel, is a cheeky little critter on this cheeky little wine. We always get excited to see them around springtime in the vineyard. They are veracious hunters and help manage the gopher population in the vineyard. The beneficial insects on the back label are painted by me. These are some of the invertebrates we are looking for in the vineyard in order to maintain a healthy pest population, naturally.
The wine club generally offers otherwise sold out wines.
